COMMON MODEL™ is not a traditional brand. It is more than a name, sign, symbol, or slogan. COMMON MODEL™ is a mindset, an ideal, a philosophy, a way of life. This website was just recently born, but I have been raising this project in my head for years—whether that be weeks at a time or seconds at a time. Notes and notes have been taken—whether that be in succinct paragraphs or incomplete sentences.
We live in a time where housing tracts are mass-produced, major corporations are merging, and theatres are filled with remakes of old movies. Differences are becoming less and less apparent and options are becoming obsolete. How many shopping centers are we going to see that have a Subway, Starbucks, Lowe’s, and Walmart?
Self-expression and individuality are now more important than ever. Despite the movements of popular society, every person is different. But we are more than different genders, body types, hair colors, and eye colors. We each have different perceptions of good fashion and bad fashion, good music and bad music. Some prefer Pollock and others prefer Pissarro.
For the Common Model, individuality is our beauty and the pavement is our runway. Through artistic expression, COMMON MODEL™ seeks to encourage introspection and focus on the beauty of difference. True creativity is not measured by the individual’s ability to influence its surroundings, but rather the individual’s ability to not be influenced by its surroundings. Be yourself and in that very action you will be different from everyone else. Step aside from the assembly line of popular society. Do not be afraid to say what you feel. Be the model you want to see…
So what does this all mean? Great question. I’m glad you asked. COMMON MODEL™ is a lifestyle brand that lives to promote the artistry of individuality. COMMON MODEL™ artists are common people with uncommon artistic expression. The artist can be any person with any set of talents. It could be you, it could be me, it could be both of us. It is not so much about what you express, or even how you express it, but rather that you are expressing you.
Millions of people never analyze themselves. Mentally they are mechanical products of the factory of their environment, preoccupied with breakfast, lunch, and dinner, working and sleeping, and going here and there to be entertained. They don’t know what or why they are seeking, nor why they never realize complete happiness and lasting satisfaction. By evading self-analysis, people go on being robots, conditioned by their environment. True self-analysis is the greatest art of progress.
Here are some of the avenues by which a Common Model expresses their individuality, but by no means are these the only avenues:
- Graphic Design
- Fashion Design
- Spoken Word
